CLEM7 took honours in the annual Queensland Engineering Excellence Awards, hosted by Engineers Australia, to recognise the contribution engineering makes to our community.
CLEM7 won the award for Project Infrastructure Over $50 million as well as Queensland’s most prestigious award, the RW Hawken Award, for the most outstanding entry considered across all categories.
This CLEM7 project was designed and constructed by the Leighton Contractors and Baulderstone Bilfinger Berger Joint Venture. A ‘fast track construction’ approach was adopted with design and construction occurring simultaneously. This enabled the project to be delivered seven months ahead of schedule and on budget for RiverCity Motorway (RCM) in a Public-Private Partnership with Brisbane City Council.
At 6.8km in length, the CLEM7 is the most technically advanced tunnel and roadway of its kind, implementing innovative design and construction processes, landmark urban design and an extensive community consultation process. The project includes two parallel, twin-lane, 4.8km tunnels, dedicated smoke ducts, electronic tolling system, 18 bridges and more than 44km of roads, including an intricate three-level interchange.
The judges were impressed by the contribution the Clem Jones Tunnel makes to the transport infrastructure of Brisbane. They also noted the project team’s high concern for safety and for residents in the local areas impacted by the construction. The judges believe that this project is a huge step towards removing long-term traffic congestion in Brisbane.
The submission was managed by AECOM, Parsons Brinckerhoff, Golder Associates on behalf of Leighton Contractors and Baulderstone.
